It is difficult to choose between non-coated paper without wood pulp and glossy coated paper. Not because there is not enough paper to choose from, but because the two papers are similar in quality, translucent paper is often overlooked in this field. Translucent paper is widely used and is widely used in certificates, announcements, inserts, commercial cards, direct mail, invitations, menus, etc.
Translucent paper performance
Translucent paper is different from ordinary paper and its printing effect is peculiar. It can make the printed graphic information clearer, the product more mysterious, and the outer packaging more attractive. Translucent paper is generally harder and stiffer than non-coated paper that does not contain wood pulp. In the papermaking process, translucent paper is easy to dry, it contains more fiber, and the filler is few, so the transparency is very good, but due to its unique papermaking and drying methods, its manufacturers are rare. Therefore, the price is also relatively expensive.
Translucent paper printing suitability
For translucent paper, the main printing method is offset printing. The number of printed lines should be controlled at 133 ~ 150dpi, and the maximum can not exceed 200dpi. Like plain paper, the printing environment of translucent paper is preferably controlled at a relative humidity of 50% and a temperature of 24 °C. If the translucent paper is pre-placed in an environment where there is no temperature and humidity control, when it is transported to the printing shop, it should be placed in a pre-adjusted temperature and humidity environment for 24 hours or longer. Translucent paper should be kept ventilated during unloading. It should be wrapped in plastic bag when transported, and covered when not in use to avoid paper contamination or water loss.
Like plastic film, the ink used for translucent paper printing is dried by oxidizing the conjunctiva instead of osmotic drying, so it is best to use a fast drying ink. However, avoid using high-temperature drying techniques such as infrared drying because translucent paper is easier to curl than plain paper. Test inks are typically used for proofing prior to official printing, and general purpose inks may increase drying time by one week. Drying time can be reduced with undertone removal.
In order to prevent the ink drying time from prolonging or the paper deformation, the ink in the oil-in-water state should be kept to a minimum, and the wetting amount can be reduced by controlling the pH of the fountain solution to 5-6, and the amount of ethanol is increased to 13 ~15% to reduce the amount of water on the plate, but these methods must be strictly controlled to avoid changing the ink performance.
In order to prevent the back surface of the translucent paper from being smeared during printing, a powder having a fineness of 15 to 20 μm can be sprayed thereon. After printing, a layer of UV varnish can be printed thereon to increase the gloss of the printed product, but to avoid Water-based emulsion varnish is used and can be printed after the ink has dried.
When printing on translucent paper, the amount of paper to be fed and the amount of paper to be fed should be as small as possible. After printing, the printed products should be arranged into small paper piles for storage.
Post-printing of translucent paper
In the specific use process, the technology of translucent paper in folding, crease, and punching process is not very mature. Translucent paper is prone to cracks when folding, and it is not easy to open when punching. The reason is that the paper is harder and more brittle due to its high fiber content. Therefore, double-sided inspection and proofing should be performed before the product is printed to avoid paper waste.
When cutting, use a 30° blunt cutter because the new knife may cause cracks in the paper immediately. A pattern paper system is required for creases and folds because the hard indentation lines can cause the translucent paper to crack when folded. In addition, the sheet of paper should be folded along the fiber direction to reduce the possibility of cracks when folding.
