Is there a real JDF viable solution in the market? How many JDF devices are there? What do printers want to get in the implementation of JDF? This is all about the questions that JDF is often asked about. This year, we are faintly aware that JDF's viable solutions are in progress and progress is very fast. Earlier this year, CIP4 conducted a survey of JDF devices among their buyers, which was repeated once a quarter to monitor JDF's progress in the market.

In this vote, it was found that the world has installed 1405-1859 sets of JDF. These figures are far more than the average person estimates. According to the author's rough estimate, half of them are printers or prepress service providers who use JDF's viable software devices but don't know. It is estimated that if more members vote in the future, the distance should be close.

We can clearly see the popularity of JDF, because half of the respondents are following this device due to the automation of JDF. Even more encouraging is the fact that we found 1261-1714 potential JDF users. They are waiting for a contract or consultation with a device company that can support JDF. From this point of view, the adoption of JDF began to show signs of rising, which is consistent with what we have learned from the printing industry.

In July 2004, CIP4 conducted a survey in the American Printing Journal. Since the survey is aimed at readers, the results are not very accurate and scientific, but they reflect what the printing industry workers are doing and thinking about. Among them, we found that most respondents have MIS and process systems. 65% of them are consistently valued to production, 27% said that the MIS system is only responsible for frontline functions; another 8% means that there is no MIS system at all or only department or process systems. As we expected, most of the respondents (86%) only considered the MIS process system as a common easy-to-buy software, but a few (about 14%) said they had a system inside.

When they were asked about the use of the MIS process system, we got some unexpected results:

91% billing information

91% valuation

77% order entry

77% sales information

77% timetable

73% paper and product inventory

73% of store data collection

50% shipping status

36% Customer Relationship Management Solution (CRM)

36% maintenance schedule

36% process analysis and workload balance

23% Digital Asset Management (DAM) or asset management and asset transfer

18% web page and electronic trading front

5% connection quality control data

However, when they were asked what projects they wanted to get through the upgraded MIS process system, 82% of the respondents hoped to have the following features:

50% connection quality control data

50% process analysis and workload balance

44% shipping status

44% web page and electronic trading front

33% maintenance schedule

28% Customer Relationship Management Solution (CRM)

28% timetable

22% Digital Asset Management (DAM) or Asset Management and Asset Transfer

22% paper and product inventory

22% sales store data collection

17% order entry

11% valuation

11% billing information

11% sales information

We can see that the order of the two is almost just reversed. This is especially true for some process automation functions, such as connecting customers via the Internet, collecting connection quality control data, analyzing processes, balancing work, collecting and notifying work delivery status. These are the features that respondents expect most.

If these features can be added to the current system, but why should they be automated with JDF's viable solutions? Among them, 92% of respondents believe that MIS process systems can increase efficiency, while 86% believe that MIS and process systems can improve their customer service quality. 57% also believe that employees will be happy to use the system if they need it. One of the main JDF functions is to save the information needed between the system and the system, and to avoid adding manual input.

In any case, 87% of respondents have heard of JDF, and only 22% of them think they are familiar with JDF or have studied JDF seriously. Up to now, 43% of respondents plan to implement JDF in the next 18 months.

According to the information obtained above, the automation of printers' feasible solutions in JDF is now relatively backward. Although JDF is just a tool that gives the technician or department manager detailed information and provides the system and software to the buyer. What are the expectations of printers who wish to implement JDF? The following analysis results are obtained from the reply of the respondent:

75% makes information between systems more efficient

75% makes the production process smoother

75% reduce human error in data entry

75% reduce the number of people

75% improve response time to customer requests

69% improved command and control of all operations

69% reduction in process waste

63% increase capacity without increasing costs

56% link customers and production processes

44% link suppliers and businesses

These numerical results are consistent with the development of the JDF solution I saw from the market. Finally, there are now different options available to printers and prepress jobs. In the October edition of JDFMarketplace, 161 of the 311 lists are JDF viable products and services, and some are more than one feature. This number is almost three times that of the Drupa 2004 version of JDFMarketplace. CIP4 members with JDF products and non-member companies (including many small MIS system companies) have not yet been calculated. It is estimated that nearly 200 JDF viable products are put into service.

The JDF market is currently in progress and products are constantly improving, and printers, prepress services and other users are also urging the development of JDF. These quick steps show that 2005 will bring changes and opportunities to the printing industry, which is an exciting year.
