Green printing has become a force in the development of the printing industry, leading the development trend and becoming the focus of attention, but also the key to profit. For printers, implementing green printing can be as simple as recycling paper inside the company, choosing recycled paper and environmentally friendly inks to improve the recyclability of printed materials, optimizing transportation methods, and training employees to improve their environmental awareness. . The implementation of environmental certification standards is a more complicated example. In the eco-management and audit rules (EMAS, Eco-Management and AuditScheme) and ISO14001 environmental management system, enterprises are encouraged to upgrade their green environmental protection strength and gradually find their own green printing methods.

Various international agreements, commitments and regulations such as the Kyoto Protocol, the Comprehensive Pollution Prevention and Control Directive, the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive, the Carbon Reduction Commitment and the REACH Regulation are affecting the development of the printing industry. However, the law alone is not enough. When printers need to significantly reduce the pollution of enterprises to the environment, additional certification standards such as ISO9001 quality management system can meet the customer's standard requirements.

Printers can reduce carbon emissions from their own, which is more effective than offsetting carbon credits. There is no international standard for how much carbon emissions should be reduced by current enterprises, but the upcoming ISO16759 standard will focus on this issue.

At present, most companies choose to obtain the ISO14001 standard, but the purpose of this standard is to help all industries control carbon emissions, not just the printing industry. The ISO16759 standard calculates the carbon footprint of the print production process and evaluates the emission reduction results to help printers provide customers with data on the carbon emissions of their prints in accordance with international standards. Customers can use this as a basis for comparison with other printers. This has laid a very valuable foundation for the printing industry to evaluate the carbon footprint of print media, including electronic media.

In addition, energy-saving printing presses are also the focus of research and development of many printing machine manufacturers. Each press manufacturer is also working to achieve alcohol-free production, reduce the use of hazardous chemicals, and invest in research on waterless printing technology.

The sustainability of digital printing has always been the focus of attention in the industry. All major machine manufacturers have a high level of enthusiasm in the sustainable development strategy, aiming at reducing the use of raw materials and continuously improving the recyclability and life cycle of parts. Digital press manufacturers are even further exploring whether software development can contribute to energy efficiency. The use of certain software does optimize workflows, increase press speed and performance, and ink and paper efficiency. And software proofreading saves time and reduces transportation costs. Not only does it reduce carbon emissions, it also enables complex management information systems to directly analyze the various stages of managing production to better manage waste and energy.

Future digital presses will not only better reduce the carbon footprint, but even reduce the digital footprint. On-demand printing allows printers to better control their costs and reduce excess production waste. Forecasts show that by 2016, environmentally friendly solvent-based inks and water-based inks will replace highly contaminated traditional solvent-based inks. The use of more environmentally friendly UV/EB energy curable inks will increase significantly.

Hazardous air pollutants (HAP) are also beginning to be included in the consideration of pollutant emissions. Most HAPs are found in solvent based inks. In order to improve recognition, the National Printing Ink Manufacturers Association (NAPIM) has introduced a rating system for ink recyclability, namely Biorenewable Content Certification (BRC). Raw materials extracted from plants can replace petroleum-based mineral oils to make environmentally friendly inks.

In terms of recycling, most inkjet printing products cannot be recycled and reused because the ink on the surface of inkjet printed products cannot be removed using deinking techniques. The deinking technology can make the waterproof ink detached from the hydrophilic fiber, so it can be applied to offset printing and gravure printing products, but it can't do anything for water-based ink. For this reason, the International Deinking Industry Association (INGEDE) is working hard. Find a solution.

Printers should consider the cost of environmental protection measures. For the enterprise, the first is to meet the customer's needs on the premise of gaining income, and the second is continuous operation and future development. The premise of business is ultimately profitable. An extreme example is Chevalier International of the Netherlands, which was once hailed as the most environmentally friendly printer, but eventually closed down. These issues require consensus in all areas and links in the printing and processing industry chain. A clear understanding of the continued development of the printing industry has become a common problem that all people need to face.
