Is it true that the new plastic bag dissolves in water and dissolves completely in 5 minutes?
Two Chilean researchers Roberto Astete and Cristian Olivares invented a new type of plastic bag that is soluble in water. They discovered this formula when testing biodegradable detergents. The team used PVA (a polyvinyl alcohol dissolved in water) as a chemical matrix and then replaced petroleum derivatives to ensure that the plastic bags degraded over time.
Petroleum derivatives in plastic bags mean that they will not decompose, but remain in the environment, causing serious harm to marine life and the natural environment.
"Our products come from a limestone that does not harm the environment." Astete, the general manager of SoluBag, explained that the company hopes to start selling these bags in Chile from October.
The Chilean government has taken various measures to reduce the use of plastic bags. From August, it will become the first country in Latin America to ban the use of traditional plastic bags in stores. This idea was originally proposed under the government led by former President Michelle Bachelet, who proposed a ban on the use of plastic in coastal areas, and current President Sebastián Piñera put it Expand to the whole country.
"It's like making bread." Astete said, "To make bread, you need flour and other ingredients. Our flour is polyvinyl alcohol and other elements approved by the FDA [US Food and Drug Administration]. They enable us to make A high-quality material to produce different products."

With the advent of the press, Astete and Olivares showed two products: plastic bags that are soluble in cold water and reusable canvas bags that can be decomposed in hot water. "Carbon remains in the water," Astete said, and medical tests showed that "it has no effect on the human body." He also drank a few sips of water to prove that what was left in the warm water was "harmless."
The earth is saved! Chile invented a new plastic bag that dissolves in water and dissolves completely in 5 minutes
Astete believes, "The main difference between traditional plastics and our plastics is that traditional plastics can stay in the environment for 150 to 500 years, while our plastics last only five minutes. You can decide when to destroy it."
Olivares said that the same fabric dissolved in hot water can be used to make reusable shopping bags or hospital products, such as mattress protectors, laboratory coats and doctor gloves, which are generally discarded after a single use.
They added that another advantage is that they can prevent suffocation, which is the cause of accidents among children in the family. When the bag touches a person's tongue or tears, the bag will dissolve. The team claims that with large-scale production plans (existing plastic companies can produce bags by changing their formulations), the cost of dissolvable plastic bags may be similar to current prices.
Astete and Olivares are not the first to make biodegradable plastic bags. In 2009, Indonesian biologist Kevin Kumala launched Avani Eco, an environmentally friendly company that produces biodegradable and compostable products. After spending ten years in the United States, Kumala returned to his home in Bali and saw that the beach was once full of plastic and started the project.
In 2014, the world produced 311 million tons of plastic. If it continues to develop at this rate, there will be more than 1.2 billion tons of plastic by 2050.
Astete and Olivares hope to provide people with a way to minimize environmental damage by providing a product that people can choose to destroy (instead of 500 years). The project won an award at this year’s Singularity University Chile Summit, which provided its creators with an internship at a Silicon Valley think tank.
We offer patented full biodegradable film and PVA bag, all products are made by casting equipment, It is different from traditional blow molding products, all blow molding products are non full biodegradable. We can produce pva films and bags in full transparent and various colors. and the PVA film is more smooth than the traditional blow molding products.
we also offer organic material full biodegradable film and bags with patented raw material and production Process.
