Pre-screening is a term coined by Chuck Weger, a former printer and current independent consultant. The original intent was that before the aircraft took off, the pilot passed pre-screening to test important items to ensure that the aircraft would not be inadvertently crashed.

In print production, preflight is to ensure that all details have been checked before production. Such a file will not destroy the raster processor and will not cause inadvertent printing problems.

A more apt understanding of preflighting is quality control checks conducted early in the work process to prevent problems such as print production and finished processing.

The following ten steps will help you ensure that the preflight is successful.

1. Change your quotation and add this sentence: "This quotation is based on an electronic file that can be output immediately. Any corrections or modifications that must be made for successful output will be charged as additional work and will be charged by Customer acceptance".

2. Create a leaflet called "Submit Disk Needs", which should have the necessary information, but it should not be made too long or too scary.

3. Request a printed copy from the customer. A color-coded print book is required if it exceeds a single color.

4. When the material arrives, compare the quotation with the material to make an assessment.

5. Check all disks for viruses and do not apply the incoming disk work. Work with copied files, or use "Collect for" in Quark or PageMaker. Options for Output or "Prepare for Service Bureau".

6. Consistent word and file storage is very important. Some companies store words on their own hard drives, while others store them on the server. The most important criterion is that all employees can access all the words, and all employees should know the different file naming standards, as well as the path of the original file and the correction file. In other words, you should not need to use a specific machine to print a file.

7. There are several methods for preflighting, each with different complexity and depth. The easiest is to use preflight authentication software such as Markzware FlightCheck or Extensis Preflight Pro.

8. The second is an application-based approach, which uses the application software that creates the file to check its basic elements, such as Quark, PageMaker, Illustrator, Freehand, PhotoShop, etc.

9. The third method of preflighting is to rasterize the original file into one that can be viewed through the display, or through, for example, Adobe. A file printed by software such as Acrobat. This method allows raster-processed or PDF-formatted files to be compared to customer-supplied prints on the display. The PDF file can then be printed on a high-precision laser printer and placed on the customer's printed copy for a second pre-check on the lamp stand. Finally, if the page is black and white, this PDF file can be passed to a high-precision laser image output for final output.

10. The fourth and final pre-test is to check for problems that may occur during printing, such as trapping, bleeding, paper-feeding, paper-grain, and ensuring that there is excess space for post-press processing.
