The printed pages and signatures are processed into a booklet, or the documents and bills are sorted and matched, and the book is printed and processed, which is collectively referred to as binding.
The binding of books and periodicals includes two major processes of ordering and loading. The order is to set the cost of the book page, which is the processing of the book block, and the dressing is the processing of the book cover, which is the binding.
First, the evolution of book binding process
The earliest book in China is to use a belt or a rope to put bamboo and wood chips with characters in a series, which is called "Simple Policy".
The simple strategy is very cumbersome and difficult to read. Later, people wrote the silk plaques with the words, according to the length of the article, rolled into a roll, and some were also equipped with wooden shafts at both ends of the silk, and the book "Reel Pack" appeared.
After the invention of the paper, the text is written on the paper, and according to a certain specification, the booklet is repeatedly folded into a rectangular shape to the left and right, and the front and back pages are adhered to a hard paper or a thick paper as a cover and a back cover. This type of binding was originally used in Buddhist classics, so it was called a folding (see Figure 1).
In the folded book, the first page and the last page are separated, and the first and last pages of the folded are glued together. When the reading is flavored, the middle sheet flies. Like a whirlwind, it is called the whirlwind (see Figure 7-1).
The books framed by the above two methods have a long time to read, the folds are broken, and the pages are scattered. In the Song Dynasty, the book was bound by paste bonding or silk-lined, and the butterfly and bag-backs shown in Figure 7-1 appeared.
From the middle of the Ming Dynasty, there was a line of books. The wire-bound book is firmly bound, beautifully framed and easy to read.
After the Qing Dynasty, movable type printing gradually replaced the engraving and printing. The output and variety of printed materials continued to increase, and the binding technology was also developed accordingly, gradually moving from manual operation to mechanization. Now, in addition to the preservation of our national tradition, a small number of precious edition books and antique books are produced, and the main binding forms are paperback and hardcover. Binding methods are divided into manual binding, semi-automatic binding, and automatic binding using a linkage.
Second, the paperback book binding process
Paperback is a commonly used form of binding for books, featuring a paper soft cover. The manual and semi-automatic binding process is:
Hit the page to cut → fold → with a signature → with book core → book → package cover → cut book
From cutting to ordering for the processing of book blocks.
(1) hitting the page and cutting
After the printed large-format pages are hit, they are cut to the required size with a single-sided paper cutter.
The cutting is done on a paper cutter. According to the length of the cutter, the paper cutter is divided into two types: full sheet and split; according to its degree of automation, it is divided into automatic paper cutter and semi-automatic paper cutter. When handling, pay attention to safety. The cut paper and cuts should be smooth, tidy, not skewed, and the specifications and sizes meet the requirements.
(2) Folding
Printed large-format pages, in the order of page numbers and the size of the book, are folded into a book, called a fold.
The way of folding is roughly divided into three types.
Vertical cross folding method
When each fold is folded, the page must be rotated by 90° to fold the next fold, and the creases of the signature are perpendicular to each other. This type of folding is easy to operate, and the number of folds has a certain relationship with the number of pages.
2. Parallel folding method
The folded book creases are parallel to each other, as shown in Figure 7-2. Suitable for pages that fold thicker paper, such as children's books, albums, etc.
3. Mixed folding method
The creases in the same signature have both parallel and vertical folding methods to mix the folding method. Most of the signatures folded by machine are in this form.
