PDF is an open electronic file format developed by Adobe. No matter which computer platform or application software is used for editing, almost all of them can be converted into PDF format for interoperability.
First, how to generate PDF file format in typesetting software
At present, the common typesetting software does not directly support the PDF file format. Most of the typesetting software cannot directly transfer the PDF file and must be generated by printing. Such as PageMaker, Quark Xpress or Illustrator must be installed with a plugin to be saved as a PDF file. Basically, PDF files containing Chinese fonts generated by various softwares must be generated by Adobe Acrobat, which can be roughly divided into three production methods:
1 Acrobat PDFWriter - suitable for book conversion, faster and smaller file size.
2 Acrobat Distiller - has a high quality of conversion for complex documents such as albums.
3 Curve EPS - the largest file size.
Second, the characteristics of the PDF file format
1 Device independence: A general PostScript file contains a variety of possible legal code, which may not work under certain conditions. For example, those that rely on certain special font structures, or output devices. In contrast, the PDF format does not contain any program structure, making it more secure and more suitable for storage or transmission in electronic form. No matter which kind of computer is used, if you can convert it to PDF format, you can open it to another computer and open the reading, printing and output without any difficulty, and maintain the format and layout of the production.
2 font embedded: In the conversion, you can choose to embed the font in the PDF file. Even if a Chinese PDF file can be opened correctly in the pure English system without Chinese fonts, the file exchange network can be truly borderless. The biggest advantage of embedded fonts is to solve the problem of different fonts or corresponding errors between file producers and exporters. The current PS process is corresponding to the word code, and must be the same series of the same font company to fully correspond. Font embedding solves this problem once and for all.
3 High compressibility: PDF is a product of the Internet era. For the convenience of online communication, it requires a huge compression ratio. For output purposes, a slightly larger compression mode is selected to ensure quality, but a compression ratio of 30% to 80% can still be obtained, which is convenient for transmission to the output company on the broadband network.
4 pages are independent: the pages of a PostScript file are interrelated. You must have processed all the pages in front of it before jumping to a page. The PDF format does not have this limitation.
Third, generate PDF with Acrobat Distiller
You should first create a PostScript document from the PS printer and then use Distiller to interpret this information to generate a PDF. This process can be done in one instance in Distiller or separately.
Print the ps file into the specified watch folder, which is automatically converted to PDF by Distiller. When generating a PDF for output, you must make some settings for its properties. It is divided into three aspects:
1. Create settings for the PS file and make settings on the printer.
First select [Settings] > [Printer] in the start menu, then right click on the Distiller printer, then click [Properties] to make various settings.
Font conversion settings: Click the [Font] tab at the top of the window, you should select: "Always use TrueType fonts" to make the output exactly the same as the print sample.
[Paper] layout: To reserve the margin outside the finished product size, the film needs to leave 7.5mm side space to cut the tangent, the alignment line color code and the bleeding position. The paper size of the printer should be reset. .
Resolution selection under [Graphics]: 2400 DPI is sufficient.
[Details] Under [Print with the following driver] Select: "AdobePS Acrobat
Distiller". [Print to the following port] can be selected separately depending on your preference.
[Add Port] Click [Other] and select "PDF" in the active window.
After Port, specify the folder to be stored for the output file. Under this setting, PS/PDF is available in one go.
"FILE: (Create a file on disk)" Under this setting, create a PS or PRN file by printing in the specified "Monitor Folder" to be converted PDF.
2. The settings from PS to PDF are performed in Distiller.exe.
Distiller runs as follows:
1 The PDF sent on the Internet should be small, the PDF should be refined, and the job options provide different application options:
Screen Optimized, Print Optimized, Press
Optimized (print optimization settings).
Generally, it can be selected according to the situation. However, when officially exporting, it is recommended to customize a set of your own job options: first select Press
Optimized (print optimization settings) to do the basics, and then execute [Settings] > [Job Options]:
[Compression]: Change the "Quality" of "Color Bitmap Image" and "Gray Bitmap Image" from the original "maximum" to "high", which can reduce the file size by 40% and increase the conversion speed by double. Basically does not damage the image quality.
[Advanced]: "Process DSC Comments (P)" under the general structure of the document - cancel the √, do not comment!
[Font]: "When embedding fails" Select "Warning and continue". It is easy to find out why the PDF cannot be generated. After the above settings are completed, the “Save Job Options As” menu will pop up after “OK”, specifying your job option name.

Once set, once a PS file enters the watch folder, Distiller will automatically convert it to PDF.
3. Use only once, such as a special layout size, before printing.
With different software, the printer options are different. In addition to PM6.5, such as "Word", "Corel" and other software, you also need to: ■ Print to file.
[Printer]: Select the typical installation of the Adobe Distiller printer. Even if you print your own color, you can convert it to PDF and print it again, avoiding many mistakes.
Fourth, the use of different typesetting software precautions
1. PageMaker typesetting software
When creating a PDF file, you must first press the ALT key and then click [File] and then drag to [Print], otherwise the font cannot be embedded! This is an inherent flaw in PM6.5.
2. Graphics software such as CorelDRAW
Automatically put the font outline, so there is no text embedded problem.
3. PDF font embedding
When you install Acrobat, select "Typical Installation" and the printer and PPD files will be installed automatically.
Font embedding: Embed your TrueType word in PDF, although the file size is slightly larger, it completely avoids the risk of errors when replacing characters in the output center. However, some TrueType word producers restrict this, such as Founder's new TrueType simplified characters, please do not choose. See Acrobat Help P79 for details on how to check fonts.
Check embedded fonts: If the PDF file is not embedded, it will be replaced when outputting. There is no guarantee that the screen/print/output will be of the same height. Therefore, it needs to be checked once. The method is to open the PDF file with Acrobat, click [File] > [Document Information] > [Font] to observe the font information. As shown in [Used Fonts], the "Embedded Subset" appears to be successful; the appearance of "FZYTJW - GB1-0" indicates that there is no embedded font.
Although the font of the first line is not embedded, the font of Windows under [Encoding] indicates that this is a common font for the system, and the replacement will not go wrong.
