For documents with poor print quality, it is best to scan the image in the grayscale format and then convert it into a monochrome bitmap for recognition. The accuracy of recognition is much higher.

Usually, everyone likes to scan in the recognition software when scanning and identifying, and directly obtains a monochrome bitmap for recognition. In fact, this efficiency is not high. The general recognition software has almost no graphics processing capability. In order to obtain a satisfactory recognition effect, it is necessary to repeatedly adjust the brightness and repeat the pre-scan, and the time required to scan one page is quite long. In addition, some recognition software will also exit the scanner after each scan, and it will waste a lot of time to restart the scanner repeatedly.

Therefore, it is better to scan the acquired image in the grayscale format and then convert it into a monochrome bitmap for recognition in the graphics processing software. Although there is one more process, the recognition accuracy is much higher. I have been using HyperSnap DX for this kind of work.

1. Run HyperSnap DX, press “Ctrl+A” to start the scanner and scan at 200dpi resolution, default brightness, contrast and “grayscale” mode.

2. Switch to the HyperSnap DX window, click on the menu bar "Color / Black and White...", drag the middle black level slider in the pop-up "turn to black and white image" window, you can immediately see the converted black and white image effect, When you are satisfied, click OK to complete the conversion. Then save the image as a file in tiff format, taking care not to turn off the program for later modification.

3. Start the identification software, click "File", open the saved graphic for identification. If the effect is not good, you can go back to the HyperSnap window and press the "Ctrl+Z" button to cancel the previous setting, and then repeat the second step to refine the adjustment, which is much faster than rescanning.

If you want to scan and identify a large number of pages of similar quality, it is not convenient to process each one. At this point, you can use the first step method to scan with standard brightness and contrast. Use HyperSnap DX to get the image processing and convert it into a monochrome bitmap. Then write down the “black level” value and set the brightness in the scanner with reference to the value. An approximate effect can be obtained. However, in order to maximize the recognition rate, it is better to set them one by one. In addition, it is very simple to adjust in HyperSnap DX. The only thing to do is to convert, save and open the image, but in exchange for the text. The recognition efficiency is doubled.

Tip: This method is especially suitable for high-resolution scanning and recognition of some text materials with poor printing quality or long-lasting storage.
