The CTP platesetter consists of three parts: an accurate and complex optical system, a circuit system, and a mechanical system.

The single-beam original laser generated by the laser is split into multiple beams (usually 200-500 beams) by a multi-channel optical fiber or a complex high-speed rotating optical splitting system. Each beam of light passes through the sound and light. The modulator modulates the brightness and darkness of the laser beam according to the characteristics of the brightness and darkness of the image information in the computer, and then becomes a controlled beam. After focusing, hundreds of micro-lasers directly hit the surface of the plate for engraving work, and after scanning the engraving, a latent image of the image is formed on the printing plate. After development, the image information on the computer screen is restored on the printing plate for direct printing by the offset printing machine. The diameter of each microlaser beam and the shape of the light intensity distribution of the beam determine the sharpness and resolution of the latent image that forms the image on the plate. The smaller the spot of the micro-beam, the closer the intensity distribution of the beam is to the rectangle (ideal), the higher the definition of the latent image. Scan accuracy depends on the mechanical and electronic control of the system. The number of laser microbeams determines the length of the scan time. The greater the number of microbeams, the shorter the time to etch a plate. At present, the diameter of the beam has been developed to 4.6 microns, which is equivalent to the printing accuracy of 600 lpi. The number of beams can reach 500. The time to etch a pair of plates can be completed in 3 minutes. On the other hand, the higher the output power and energy density (laser energy per unit area, in joules per square centimeter) of the plate beam, the faster the etching rate. However, excessive power can also have a negative effect of shortening the working life of the laser and reducing the distribution quality of the beam.

The plate-making machine light source includes: gas laser (argon ion laser 488nm, power: about 20mw); solid-state laser (FD YAG 532nm, 100mw or more); semiconductor laser (LD, infrared laser in semiconductor laser has low power, long life advantage .)

The direct plate making system is a comprehensive multidisciplinary technology industry that includes precision machinery and optical technology, electronic technology, color digital image technology, computer and software technology, new printing plate and material technology, automation technology and network technology. The automatic production system is another major technological revolution in the contemporary printing industry.
