The first Sino-British (Guangdong) Marine Plastic Pollution Prevention and Control Seminar was held in Guangzhou on December 4. The event is dedicated to developing a dialogue between Guangdong Province and the United Kingdom in the field of plastic pollution and its impact on the marine environment, and exploring opportunities for cooperation. More than 50 Chinese and British policymakers, scientific research experts, representatives of the plastics industry and plastics processing industry, and representatives of non-governmental organizations gathered to discuss the current situation of plastic pollution and the protection of the marine environment.
This seminar was hosted by the Guangdong Society of Environmental Sciences and supported by the British Consulate General in Guangzhou and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (UK).

Plastic pollution has become an increasingly serious global environmental problem, threatening the ecological environment, public health and sustainable economic development. According to statistics, as of now, the total amount of plastic waste in the world's oceans is about 150 million tons, and an additional 12 million tons of plastic waste is discharged into the ocean every year, and 80% of it comes from production and life on land.
The British Consul General in Guangzhou said: "In 2018, the British government announced a 25-year environmental plan, which will eliminate all avoidable plastic waste pollution by the end of 2042, while also encouraging manufacturing to take responsibility for the environmental impact of plastic products. To support the sustainable transformation of the plastics industry."

This seminar brought together important experts in the field of marine plastic pollution from China and Britain: several experts from the British Department of International Trade, the British Marine Conservation Association, the British Eunomia Company, and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation shared the current status of the British marine plastic pollution problem, Macro policy framework, specific control measures and technical solutions. Chinese experts from Jinan University, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences also gave detailed presentations on the status, experience and prospects of marine plastic pollution control in Guangdong, the Pearl River Basin and the South China Sea. How to drive the accelerated transformation of the global plastic value chain and create a new plastic economy has also become an expansion and highlight of the expert discussion.
