In PageMaker 6.0 or above, there is a plug-in "Update PPD" that is used to query the available memory and font information of the imagesetter or printer and create a "custom PPD" with the change information.

The customer's files often have Chinese and English fonts from multiple manufacturers, and the RIP software or the photo library of the output center only has one or two manufacturers' fonts. At this time, only the Chinese and English fonts are downloaded when the files are issued. PPD will download all Chinese or all English, although it can also output but hide many problems at the same time. For example, the speed of downloading all fonts is very high and the downloaded font is a font in TrueTyPe format, which sometimes causes the font to run. Individual fonts also lack strokes.

The function of “Update PPD” is to query the type and quantity of fonts in the imagesetter or printer through the network. Form a new PPD, when the row selects this PPD to download the font. The PPD indicates the fonts that are not in the ordering software or in the printer. The existing fonts are no longer downloaded to meet the output requirements.

Updating PPD on Apple Computer is to select PS Printer 8.3 in the adapter, select the name of the imagesetter or printer through APPjeTa, and then select "Plug-in" / "Update PPD" in the PageMaker software. Then select the PPD to be updated, such as "SciteXDolev800", etc., select "Include printer hard disk font" in "Options" to generate a PPD with "*" number, that is, the updated PPD.
