PVA film and bag market analysis

- Sep 16, 2019-

After more than 40 years of development, China's PVA industry has become the world's largest PVA producer, with 14 PVA production companies including petroleum ethylene, natural gas acetylene and calcium carbide acetylene.

In 2007, domestic PVA consumption was 512,000 tons, and the average annual growth rate from 2000 to 2007 was 7.2%. In 2008, affected by the global financial crisis, the development of PVA downstream construction, textile and other industries was seriously frustrated, and domestic PVA consumption decreased by 4.5% year-on-year. In the second half of 2009, the downstream market of PVA improved, and domestic PVA consumption increased by 2.7% year-on-year. In the next few years, domestic PVA demand will grow at a relatively steady rate. Tiantuo Consulting predicts that consumption will reach 728,000 tons in 2015 and an average annual growth rate of 6.4% in 2009-2015.

China's PVA consumption is mainly distributed in East China (28%), South China (28%), Northern Region (including Northeast, Shandong, Henan, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi and Gansu, accounting for 29%). Southwest China (including Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, and Hubei, accounting for 5%) and Sichuan and Chongqing (10%).

Consumption composition and forecast

(1) Construction glue. The application of PVA in this industry mainly includes putty glue and coating binder base, which accounts for more than 40% of the total amount, which is a veritable first application field. The industry mainly uses medium viscosity PVA17-99, PVA20-99 and high viscosity PVA24-99, PVA26-99 and the like. Its development trend is high viscosity. High-viscosity products have been widely used in coastal developed areas such as East China and South China, and are the main varieties of demand for the construction rubber industry in the future.

(2) Textile slurry. PVA is mainly used for pure polyester or polyester cotton yarns, and has good adhesion and film forming properties. However, for high-density pure cotton yarns, a part of PVA and acrylic syrup are also required to be mixed. The main varieties used in this industry are PVA17-99 and PVA05-88. The market is mainly concentrated in East China, Shandong, Hubei, Sichuan, Chongqing and other places.

In the world, no adhesives have been found which are cheaper and better than PVA. China is a textile country with the largest polyester production in the world. The pure polyester or polyester/cotton sizing field is an important consumer market for PVA. However, foreign environmental trade barriers restrict or even disable PVA as a slurry, and modified starch replaces some PVA. Therefore, the proportion of PVA applications in the industry has dropped from 35% at the highest level to around 21%. It is predicted that the proportion of PVA applications in the textile industry will continue to shrink in the future, and will fall to around 17% in 2015.

(3) Adhesive. In addition to construction adhesives, PVA can also be used in combination with other chemical raw materials to make adhesives for various applications, or as a protective colloid to produce white latex, mainly used in paper, wood, textiles, office glues and high-grade coating bases. In 2009, PVA consumption in this field accounted for about 11% of total consumption.

In addition to the low content of white latex technology, the high-end adhesives that have been blended have high technical content and high added value. The users are mainly well-known foreign-funded enterprises such as National Starch, Henkel, Wacker, etc. PVA is mainly used for partial alcoholysis products, such as PVA17-88 and PVA24-88. The users in this field are mainly concentrated in the South China region of East China, especially in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong.

(4) Fiber. Velon fiber is a synthetic fiber produced by using PVA as raw material. It has varieties such as vinylon staple fiber, vinylon long fiber, high strength and high modulus, medium strength medium mold and water soluble fiber. Among them, high-strength and high-modulus fibers have high strength and modulus, strong fiber pull and good comprehensive performance, and are widely used in building materials, rubber products, coated fabrics, plastic hoses and other industrial lines that require higher strength. Industry, especially in cement and building materials. High-strength and high-modulus vinylon fiber is recognized as the most ideal “green” high-tech material to replace asbestos as a skeleton material. The trend of increasing demand for high-strength and high-modulus fibers in foreign markets has already appeared, and is widely used in the European Union, the United States, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Some enterprises in China have been able to produce high-strength and high-modulus fibers, and have certain exports, and their applications in construction have attracted attention. With the increase in demand for high-strength and high-modulus vinylon fibers at home and abroad, the demand for PVA in the domestic fiber industry will further increase.

(5) polyvinyl butyral (PVB). The PVB film is mainly used as a glass interlayer film. PVB laminated glass has excellent properties such as safety, heat preservation, noise control and UV isolation. It is widely used in building safety glass. High-end PVB film is used in automobile windshield. It is used as bulletproof glass for airplanes, tanks, ships, etc., and can also be used for solar cells and solar receivers.

Major PVB producers abroad include DuPont and Solutia. Due to backward technology, domestic PVB development is slow, and PVB film used for laminated glass mainly relies on imports. The total production capacity of domestic PVB resin is about 25,000 t/a, and the annual output is about 15,000 tons.

Since the aging time of the PVB film (50 years) is more than double that of the EVA film (20 years), the foreign solar photovoltaic cell packaging glass film has replaced the EVA film by the PVB film. In China, although the price of PVB film is higher than that of EVA film, due to its excellent aging resistance and the country's increasing support for the solar industry, downstream PV cell packaging glass has great potential for PVB film consumption.

In the next few years, with the rapid development of photovoltaic cells and the automotive and real estate industries, the demand for PVB resin in the domestic market will show explosive growth, resulting in a significant increase in the use of PVA in the PVB industry.

(6) Papermaking. PVA has strong adhesion to cellulose, good film formation, and high film strength. PVA is mainly used as a paper surface sizing agent, pigment binder and beater additive in the paper industry to improve the abrasion resistance, folding resistance and tear strength of paper, and improve gloss, smoothness and printing adaptability. Domestically, not only the medium and low grade paper surface sizing agent should use PVA, but also the medium and high grade paper such as inkjet paper, thermal paper and carbonless copy paper. The imported products mainly include PVA-205 (0588), PVA-203 (0388), PVA-117 (17-99), and PVA-105 and BF-05 (05-99) of Japan Kuraray Co., Ltd. and Changchun, Taiwan.

(7) Biodegradable PVA film. Water-soluble PVA film is a new type of plastic product that has emerged internationally. It utilizes the film-forming properties of PVA, water and biological degradation properties, and can be completely degraded into CO2 and H2O. It is a veritable green high-tech environmentally friendly packaging. material. In Europe, America and Japan, water-soluble PVA films have been widely used in the packaging of various products. The development of water-soluble PVA film in China is still in its infancy, and industrial R&D has only really begun in the past five years. It is mainly used in two fields of embroidery and water transfer (color printing of glass, ceramics, electrical enclosures, etc.). The annual usage of PVA in this respect is about 10,000 tons.

China is a big consumer of plastics. In the total consumption of nearly 10 million tons of various plastic films, if the PVA film replaces 5% of the total, the annual demand will reach hundreds of thousands of tons. As China gradually becomes in line with international standards, the environmental protection requirements for packaging are increasing. This has strong support for the promotion and development of water-soluble PVA packaging films, and its potential market is quite large.
