Pop-up book development and concept

- Aug 16, 2023-

"Pop-up Book" refers to books that add movable mechanisms to the pages of books or expand the art of pop-up paper through the opening and closing of the pages. In the 1930s, when Blue Ribbon, a New York publishing house, produced a series of stereoscopic picture books for Disney's cartoon protagonists, it pioneered "pop-up", a pop-up book term that is now commonly used in the world. Before that, pop-up books were called movable books or mechanical books, and toy books. Or it is called by the organ used in the book, such as pull-the-tab or lift-the-flap.
The biggest difference between pop-up books and paper art decorations and paper toys such as paper carvings and three-dimensional greeting cards is that pop-up books have the essence and characteristics of the content of the book. In terms of the historical origin of pop-up books, pop-up books should be a special category in children's literature publications, more precisely an extension of the "funny" or "creative upgrade" of picture books or alternative picture books.
History (learn about a few of the more significant eras):
1. In the 1200s, the creation and prototype of pop-up books.
Matthew. Matthew Paris (1200~1259) was an English historian, artist, and monk of the Church of St. Benedict, who used the "insert" method to make pilgrimage maps from England to the Holy City and Jerusalem. From this we can see that it is not a book designed specifically for children.
2. In the 1765s, a pop-up book for children in the true sense appeared.
Robert. Robert Sayer, a native of the United Kingdom, made the first book to actually show children activities, calling the toy book the "clown book". Because it was printed on the clown characters in the most popular theater plays of the time. This kind of book uses the "flip of paper" that has been drawn and illustrated to turn up or down to make the storyline change when the picture changes.
3. In the 1800s, the first golden age of toy books (pop-up books) began.
From "paper dolls" to movable paper, it has been expanded to make accessories in books. Especially in Britain and Germany, the Industrial Revolution became a hotbed for the development of the leisure class on the European continent, which had extra money to spend on expensive books; And there is also extra time to read to children, during this period pop-up books reached a golden period.
