The author teaches pre-press technical courses such as output file inspection and color management. Students often ask questions about PDF. There are also people in the market who talk about the benefits of PDF, and prepress equipment companies are also vigorously developing PDF processes and so on. How big is the function of PDF and how is it working? This time, the author and everyone will study how PDF files work with color management to make colors more accurate.

The full name of the PDF is Portable Document Format, and Chinese is a portable file format. PDF is a database that refines the originally exported PostScript code into a page. It can convert fonts, images, and vector objects in the original file into a file format suitable for multiple purposes. In other words, the same file can be applied to different output methods, such as digital drafting, layout, output film, CTP, digital printing, online transmission, browsing and e-books.

After ten years of development, PDF has gone through five stages, from 92 years of PDF1.0 to today's PDF1.4 version, and more high-end versions such as PDF/X, etc. The following table supports different versions of color capabilities. Comparison. Since ICC color management is supported in PDF1.3 and PDF versions 1.4, I will focus on the color processing of Acrobat 5.0.

We need to use color management in PDF files. We must start with how to generate or convert PDF files. There are many ways to generate PDFs, including (1) simple tools using PDF Writer, and (2) different application software. PhotoShop, PagerMaker, FreeHand, and Office are generated directly, (3) the original file is generated during the printing process, (4) the file is output as PostScript, and then Acrobat is used Distiller produces, (5) uses some specialized software such as PDF Creator to generate, (6) uses high-order output RIP to generate. The first method described above does not support color management. The second and third methods have limited support for color management, but the methods of the fourth to sixth methods are relatively complete and effective.

Color settings in Acrobat Distiller

(1) First select Job Options from the menu Setting.

(2) Select the PDF version you need, if you have no special reason, you should choose the latest PDF1.4 version.

(3) Different color management modes can be selected in the setting of Color option. If you want to set your own color management mode, you should select None.

(4) There are four options in Color Management Policies. Leave Color Unchanged is to keep all values unchanged when converting PDF files. If you know that the next process has set color management mode, you can use this option; Tag Everything for Color Mgmt (no conversion) keeps all values unchanged, but the ICC Profile selected in Working Spaces is embedded in the PDF file as needed, so that the staff of the next process knows the ICC Profile of the file source; Tag Only Images For Color Mgmt (no conversion) is the same as the previous option, but 祗 is affecting the bitmap image part, and the text and frame graphics have no effect, such as the image in the page is RGB mode, and the text and frame graphics are CMYK. If you want to change the color of the text part, you can use this option; Convert All Colors to sRGB If the PDF file is used for webpage or general display purposes in the future, this option can be converted into a PDF file. Easy to transfer.

(5) Optional Default can be selected in the Intent option, so the color gamut conversion method will be determined by the output part.
