Recall that in the 1980s, only printing companies and prepress factories had color proofing equipment. In the early 1990s, computer-savvy customers began to make their own productions, and sent the prepared documents to the printing house for high-end scanning and proofing.
In the mid-1990s, customers purchased roller scanners, high-capacity servers, and more sophisticated internal output devices like 3M/Imation's Rainbow. Today, customers continue to maintain more in-house production work, which has led to changes like remote proofing.
Remote proofing first sends the documents back to the customer from the printing house via express delivery and outputs them on the customer's color proofing machine. Later, the printer directly exported the documents to the color proofer at the customer's office via ISDN or high-speed T-1 lines.
Today, Internet-based (FTP Transfer File Transfer Protocol) sites have been established for tech-savvy printing and prepress manufacturers. These sites are often built on the Internet server of the printing house, allowing customers who have already connected to the Internet to upload their files to the FTP server of the printing house. After the pre-press production is completed, the printer copies the files back to the server. Customers can download completed files from the server and output them on their own color proofer.
The color proofing method of Day and Night Express has given way to FTP remote proofing. FTP remote proofing allows printers and customers to see the same proofs a few minutes after the file is sent.
Paul Hanson, CEO of Hanson Graphics in Memphis City, said: "The TP site does not significantly increase costs, but it can better serve our customers, thus increasing our business volume. We offer variable data, short-run, on-demand printing services to some customers, and if there are no FTP sites, these services will not be allowed by cost.
FTP is changing the way printers and prepress companies provide services to their customers. An output test participant received his test file via FTP within 15 minutes. This way is better than the day and night express way.
