As a member of the modern civilized society, everyone deals with the printing industry in various identities and ways. In other words, everyone can influence the printing industry and promote its healthy and sustainable development without sacrificing the environment. Below, we will discuss the sustainable development and green printing of the industry with regard to the main process flow of the printing industry and the relationship between the relevant consumer links and environmental protection, or the impact and significance of environmental protection.

1. Choose environmentally friendly

Ink in the printing industry is indispensable and uses a lot, but it is also the most serious harm to human health and the environment. The first is volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The volatilization of ink solvents can cause serious greenhouse effects, which can cause photochemical smog and damage the human nervous system. Secondly, heavy metal elements such as clamps, chromium and mercury in ink pigments, if they contain these heavy metals. The use of ink for food packaging or close contact with the human body is unimaginable. In order to reduce the damage of the ink to the environment, it is necessary to use a new type of non-polluting ink.

(1) UV-curable ink: UV-curable ink refers to irradiation with ultraviolet light of different wavelengths to change the ink from liquid to solid, and to form and dry. Since this ink does not contain any volatile solvent, it has no VOC or other Hazardous substances are emitted, and the pollution is almost zero. It is a truly environmentally friendly ink. It also has the advantages of good gloss, bright colors and fast drying speed. It is an ideal ink. At present, UV ink technology is relatively mature, but it should be used to prevent ultraviolet rays from harming operators and avoiding ozone. These problems can be solved by ventilating the UV lamp around the UV lamp by providing the operator with UV-protective overalls and rubber gloves.

(2) Water-based ink: This kind of ink uses water and ethanol as solvent. The VOC emission is extremely low, it has little environmental pollution and does not endanger human health. It is the only ink approved by the American Food and Drug Association. In the United States, 95% of flexo prints are printed with water-based inks. In addition, it also has the characteristics of non-flammable, bright colors, non-corrosive plates, good adhesion, and strong water resistance. It should be noted that the aqueous ink is generally alkaline. Therefore, the waste water such as the ink tank and the printing plate should be added to the acidic substance for precipitation before it can be discharged, otherwise the water body will be polluted.

(3) Water-based UV ink: Since the diluent of the currently used UV ink is toxic and irritating to the skin, it is necessary to improve the diluent. Water-based Uv inks were born in this context, using ethanol and water as thinners. This ink has good environmental properties of the above two inks.

(4) New environmentally friendly inks: such as vegetable oil inks, soybean oil is currently the most used. The American Soybean Oil Association standard stipulates that the sheet-fed offset ink has a soybean oil content of more than 20%, and the rotary offset ink has a soybean oil content of 7% or more. Japan's Osaka Printing Ink Company has also recently introduced a new environmentally friendly ink, which is a sheetfed offset ink, which is a 100% vegetable oil ink based on soybean oil, which meets environmental protection requirements.

2. Environmental protection of coating

The coating can make the appearance of the print look more beautiful, while also increasing the strength of the print and providing good protection, but it has an impact on the environment. The aqueous (AQ) coating releases less VOC than the petrochemical coating. Therefore, it is a better environmental choice. Waterborne glazing prints can be recycled and reused without the use of solvents. UV glazing uses a UV (UV) lamp to cure liquid preparations during the printing process. Although this UV lamp consumes a lot of energy, this process does not release VOCs or solvents into the air. Regardless of which protective glazing film is used, there is a good way to do this – we can minimize the glazing area, such as glazing only the dense area of the ink, without the full glazing of the entire sheet. The new waterborne varnishes and UV varnishes contain no solvents and can be used in a wide range of applications. Especially in the field of packaging and printing, water-based varnish has been widely used in the packaging of cigarettes, wine labels, food packaging bags and other products because it does not cause harm to the human body.
