With the continuous networking and digitization of printing technology, digital offset printing has begun to spread at home and abroad, and a new ink, electronic ink, suitable for the use of digital offset printing presses has also been used. Electronic inks contain charged liquid ink particles that enable electronically controlled printing of the position of the particles in digital printing. Electronic inks can reach very small particles (1-2 microns), so small particles enable printing to achieve higher resolution and smoothness, sharpening the edges of the image, resulting in a very thin image layer. Electronic inks have now played a role in the following areas. (1) Standard basic color CMYK; (2) Advertising color 6 color setting adds orange red, purple, so that the color reproduction ability is much higher than the original 4 color based color reproduction ability; (3) PANTONE compatible Indigo special Color system; (4) opaque white coating of colorless printing material; (5) fluorescent ink. Indigo's color digital offset presses offer a unique combination of features, all using electronic inks (ie Indigo's unique liquid inks).
First, the manufacturing process of electronic ink
A special ink that is printed onto a treated base material by printing, the diameter of which is only the size of the hair, and is encapsulated by microcapsules. There are many positively charged white particles and negatively charged black particles in one microcapsule, and the positive and negative electric particles are distributed in the transparent liquid in the microcapsule. When the microcapsules are charged, the positively charged particles accumulate on the side visible to the observer, which is shown in white; when negatively charged, the negatively charged black particles accumulate on the side that the observer can see, which looks It is black. These particles are controlled by the electric field positioning, that is, where the display color is controlled by the last electric field, and the control electric field is generated by the bottom plate with the high resolution display.
The manufacturing process of paper-like array electronic ink display media tools can be divided into:
1. Coating of electronic ink.
First, the electronic ink is uniformly printed onto a conductive transparent plastic substrate. That is, the microcapsule color particles are suspended and dispersed in a liquid medium to form an ink in a usual sense, and then printed on a plastic by a screen printing method.
Like plastic sheets, various surfaces such as fibers, glass, and even paper can be used as substrates for electronic inks, forming information display media, and expanding the range of information media.
2. The plastic sheet printed with electronic ink is attached to a bottom plate.
When pasting, first apply a layer of adhesive on the plastic sheet, and then use a roller to crush, so that the plastic sheet is evenly bonded to the bottom plate.
A front rolling plate (FPL) with electronic ink is formed. The backplane has a high resolution display array whose circuitry is controlled by display software to form graphics composed of pixels.
Second, the advantages of electronic ink
Indigo's color digital offset presses offer many advantages over their electronic inks:
1, high brightness, high definition and durability. Manufacturers use the same ingredients as traditional inks, but only charge inks, make electronic inks. Therefore, electronic inks are similar to traditional inks printed on paper, but the brightness and contrast are high when matched with paper. And can have a 180 degree viewing angle. It can be clearly seen from the results of high magnification that the image formed by the electronic ink has a sharper sharpness than the image formed by the electrostatic copying dry powder. This advantage is clearer at the edges of printed continuous-tone or fine-printed text images. A clean and unpolluted background of electronic ink images is also worth noting. This advantage comes from the way the tiny particles of the electronic ink are transferred during printing.
2, dot gain and color consistency. Dot gain refers to the tendency of printed continuous harmonic image lines to diffuse under imprint. The Indigo digital color offset press controls dot gain. The Indigo press has a calibration function that allows the printed dots to be within the required size range. In addition, the Indigo press automatically adjusts the optimal density (such as the darkness of the look) and the size of the dots to give each print the same look.
3. Image smoothness. Many people think that the quality of offset printing is the image smoothness, which is not the case. The key to quality is the uniformity of the image. Indigo presses, unlike electrostatic dry powder presses or copiers, can only output images of the same smoothness regardless of the material of the paper, which results in varying smoothness (eg solid dry powder coverage) and highlighted areas in the dark areas (no Dry powder covered area). The electronic ink image matches the smoothness of the substrate and, like a conventional offset press, produces a rough to dark to high brightness effect. According to the different figures and the smoothness characteristics of the offset printing machine, the actual operation shows that the ideal smoothness of the electronic ink can basically meet the requirements of various papers except ultra-smooth paper. For medium smoothness papers, electronic inks are superior to lithographic inks, but lithographic inks are superior in the field of ultra-smooth paper.
4, color difference. Electronic ink can be printed according to international color standards. These standards are all based on the four-color standard basic color CMYK (green, yellow, black, black). Lithographic printing uses different ink formulas according to different standards, while electronic inks use only one set of colors for different standards. The electronic ink adjusts the concentration of the ink (concentration of color) by electrons to suit different needs. The special properties of the electronic ink and the charging characteristics of the ink determine its unique function on a four-color basis. In addition to printing the four-color base color, the electronic ink of the spot color system extends the color gamut to a color gamut that cannot be achieved by the four-color base color. The spot color ink system is capable of six-color printing and the imaging uses a primary transfer technique.
5, instant drying. Because the electronic ink will solidify as it is transferred to the substrate, the finished product will dry out when leaving the Indigo press. The electronic ink does not need to be further dried. The electronic ink can be cured without emissions without further drying. At the same time, the electronic ink only needs 100 ° C, and the relatively low temperature makes the substrate not heated, damaged or curled.
6, no fading under the light. The pigment particles encapsulated in the electronic ink silicone resin prevent the chemical components of the pigment from being oxidized or affected by moisture, especially in the case of intense ultraviolet radiation, which is superior to conventional offset inks in this respect.
7, low energy consumption. The electronic ink display medium is a completely reflective reading medium and does not require background lighting; unlike computer monitors and LCD display media, light and graphic information is represented by light, and light generation depends on electrical energy. Once the electronic inks are displayed on the display panel, they maintain the information content in a stable display state until the next display page is updated. Display media such as computer displays and LCDs must maintain a stable display of page information, and it is necessary to continuously supply power to emit the light required for display. Thus, the advantage of electronic ink is that the power it consumes is not the amount of time displayed, but the number of page updates.
8, strong printability. Electronic inks are suitable for almost all materials and can be printed on textiles, paper, plastics and many other materials. We know that the LCD display is displayed on the glass, but it is heavy and brittle. Electronic inks can be displayed on plastic surfaces, making them ultra-thin, flexible and not fragile. Electronic ink is an ink. If someone walks into the laboratory and accidentally is splashed by electronic ink, then this person becomes a walking monitor.
Printing with electronic ink is very easy. For example: it can be used for web printing, and it is estimated that it will be used for glossy advertising paper and other large-format labels in the near future. Today, electronic inks are beginning to work with other electronic devices. For example, E-Ink recently announced that it will work with IBM to develop a world-class SVGA electronic ink display. It is estimated that electronic ink displays may be put on the market in the last year or two. Electronic inks are also said to be in line with the emerging revolutions in the publishing industry in the field of printed electronics. E-Ink and Lucent Technologies have produced the world's first fully printed display. Their ultimate goal is to print on one sheet of paper with one side and electronic ink on the other.
