This article is written by a technician with many years of experience in the operation and maintenance of the ECRM-VRL45 laser imagesetter, and summarizes some common troubleshooting methods and routine maintenance practices for reference.

1. Common faults and troubleshooting

(1) Imagesetter cutter does not reset

Symptom:
When the "CUT" button on the imagesetter is pressed, "CUTTER NOT PARKED" is displayed in the indicator window on the operation panel, indicating that the cutter is not in the home position and the imagesetter cannot operate normally.

Remedy:
Open the top cover of the imagesetter and gently pull out the film, or remove any film jammed near the cutter. Then, using the control panel and the built-in control program of the imagesetter, perform the following steps:

  • Select "MENU OPTIONS → DIAGNOSTICS", press "NEXT"
  • Select "DIAGNOSTICS → UNWIND FILM", press "SELECT"
  • Select "SPINNER TEST", press "SELECT"
  • When "PARK CUTTER" appears, press "NEXT" again

The cutter will reset and the imagesetter will return to normal operation.

(2) Imagesetter does not take film

Symptom:
After exposure, it is found that there is no film in the cassette.

Possible causes and solutions:

  1. The film is not correctly installed in the cassette, and the film leader does not extend out of the cassette. Reinstall the film properly.
  2. The driving wheel and driven wheel at both ends of the sprocket roller are stuck, or the screws beside the wheels are loose, preventing rotation. Clean the wheel bearings or tighten the screws.
  3. The film advances but is pressed under the film roller instead of entering the cassette. In this case, open the machine and remove the film.
  4. The film is damp and sticks in the exit channel, preventing forward movement. Remove and replace the film.

(3) Image shortening in the film direction or inaccurate four-color registration

Symptom:
After the machine has been used for a period of time, four-color film misregistration occurs. In severe cases, the layout on the film is noticeably shorter than that printed by the laser printer, and the text on the film appears compressed.

Cause:
Film misregistration or text compression is usually related to uneven film transport speed. In addition, dust and fine particles from the film may accumulate on the rubber rollers over time, causing slippage. As a result, the film cannot be driven at a constant speed, leading to text compression.

Solution:
Clean the rubber rollers thoroughly using a special rubber-roller cleaning agent.

2. Daily maintenance of the imagesetter

(1)

The imagesetter should be placed in a stable, dry, and well-ventilated environment, away from strong vibrations, strong electric fields, and strong magnetic fields. Ambient temperature is also critical. In summer, the room temperature should not exceed 22 °C, otherwise heat dissipation of the electrical components will be affected, reducing their service life during prolonged operation.

(2)

Correctly adjust the exposure intensity and avoid setting it too high. Excessive exposure not only affects output quality but also shortens the service life of the imagesetter.

(3)

Make full use of the imagesetter's self-diagnostic function. This function is an important reference for fault analysis. If the self-test fails, the fault is likely within the imagesetter itself. If the self-test is normal, the problem may lie in the host computer, interface cable, or interface connection.

(4)

When replacing film, wipe the rubber rollers inside the imagesetter with a cloth dampened with clean water. Avoid using alcohol or other chemical solvents, as they may damage the performance of the rubber rollers.

(5)

Regularly have professional engineers clean the optical path system of the machine. This helps ensure high-quality output and extends the service life of the laser tube.
