When attending large and small occasions, I was often asked about the development of digital printing. For example, is it traditional printing fast or digital printing fast? Will digital printing replace offset printing, screen printing and flexographic printing? If it really wants to replace traditional printing, when will that day come? 5 years, 8 years, still have to wait another 10 years?

Other advanced countries must go faster than Hong Kong, at least 10 years faster than Hong Kong, which can be learned from the experience of the past 20 years. Therefore, the author believes that it is necessary to tell the reader some knowledge that is not widely known. In fact, Hong Kong has fallen behind in more than 10 years in many respects. As in our newspaper industry, CTP has not been widely used so far. In recent years, we have just learned to receive PDF files. Is it because Adobe is not promoting well, or is Hong Kong people unwilling to accept new things? However, Hong Kong people never hesitate to buy the latest iPhone, buy the most expensive luxury car, but the investment in production automation will always be slow. Why they have such a mentality is really puzzling. (PDF is Adobe's second most contributing product, Post Script is the first, and the rest is just general.)

There are too few people who work hard to do printing.

Digital printing has developed rapidly in recent years. Although Hong Kong's pace has not yet caught up with Japan and Singapore, it has finally followed the general trend and is better than accepting CTP. Due to the needs of the work, the author has contacted thousands of large and medium-sized printing companies and advertising agencies, and saw very interesting phenomena. First of all, the agency turned out to be the latest designer to use PC as Dtp at the latest. Instead, the small advertising design company adopted Dtp at least 5 to 8 years earlier than the agency. Perhaps because the agency is really a source of money, not graphic design itself, it has not kept up with Dtp computerization; this may also be the reason for slowing down the entire newspaper industry. Of course, the newspaper industry itself is one of the main reasons, but all this is a thing of the past. They will have the opportunity to catch up and discuss it later.

Besides, the printing industry in Hong Kong is really a lot of people who do diligently do printing, but they do too little with their heart. There are too many people who confuse the past, and there are too few people who really think about improvement. There are too many experts and consultants, but few can give answers. This is a very interesting and worthwhile topic. If money can solve this problem, banks and governments can help, but if it is because of other non-monetary reasons, it is very worrying. In fact, this phenomenon has not only occurred in the printing industry. The development of all industries in Hong Kong has stagnated, so that even movies, music, design and art have been overtaken by South Korea. When will we be able to realize it?

Hong Kong still needs to be developed

Hong Kong is a developing city that is far from reaching international standards. The railway system we are proud of today is far less than the Japanese railway 30 years ago. Even if we care about the old district care that we occasionally care about, we still can't get to Hokkaido (Japan's rural area) 45 years ago. Is this not? Need to introspect? All of these prove that Hong Kong people are only trying hard and not brainstorming; they only look at the present and ignore the future. How many years does it take for Hong Kong to know how to classify public waste bins? Not to mention improving air quality. Japan has done a good job 30 years ago. At present, there are more than 16 kinds of household wastes in the local area. Different metals and different plastic packagings are printed with different logos for different colors, so that the general public and the elderly can easily identify them. .

The current situation has been briefly explained, and I hope to inspire Hong Kong people. It is not too late to be active. Back to Top: How fast can digital printing be? I believe that the number of readers who can answer correctly is 0. I can be very sure about this, otherwise the above words will be unfounded. If the printers in Hong Kong can answer correctly, they will not work as hard as the author has said, and they will think less. (If you are right, or very close, please inform me to correct it.) Hong Kong printers have given me the impression that some are slow and some are even retrogressive. Can we use digital printing to cheer up this time? It changes.

When speed is more important than anything else

Now the answer is revealed: the fastest digital printing speed is about 41.2 inches per second. The width of the paper is not limited. How wide the paper can create a wide digital printing machine. If this speed is calculated in minutes, it can be printed 2,472 呎, which is 148,320 mph, and can be printed synchronously on the bottom surface, which is 148,320 呎 * 2 = 296, 640 呎. If calculated on the A4 page, you can print up to 928,612 versions per hour. This is just a gas record, which is the speed of digital presses currently available. More correctly, this may be an old record three years ago.

It takes at least 3 to 4 years for each press to go from trial to production and sale. So the real answer, according to Moore's Law, should be multiplied by 2 to 3 times, which is the highest printing speed in the experimental stage, which can print 247.5 呎 per second (synchronous calculation on the bottom). The width depends on the paper limit. At present, the average model can provide 25.5 or more width, that is, at least 3 million A4 pages can be printed per hour.

Readers may immediately think of the above mentioned, the newspaper industry will have a chance to catch up - right! Imagine using such a high-speed digital press to print newspapers and magazines, and the deadline for writing can be delayed from 6:00 pm to 3:00 am. Since then, there has been no film, CTP, or paper separation—because digital printing can print one copy of the newspaper and break the group at the same time. Readers may ask: Is the cost expensive and unaffordable? But this is not the topic of today, and I will answer it later.

Can digital printing quality compete with offset printing?

Readers may ask again: Can the print quality match the Offset print? Although this is not the issue, I will disclose some data here. The current digital printing technology can easily print 175lpi, or even 3,000lpi - you are not mistaken, the layout is not wrong, it is 3,000lpi is not 300lpi! 12 years ago, I collected an Offset print, which was 1,000 lpi and required special ink and special plate making technology. This should be the limit of traditional printing, but it is not necessary to print books and other 99% of printed materials, so it is not popular. Ultra-fine digital printing technology has just started. Its ink droplets are only one-tenth of the inkjet technology currently in use. It is only used for anti-counterfeiting and some special industrial applications, such as detector components, micro-boards, Display fluorescent screens, etc. Because it can print 3D objects, there is no limit to the use, beyond the limitations of flat printing, there is a chance to tell everyone.

Why digital printing can be upgraded to such an amazing speed?

Again on the speed of digital printing. Why digital printing can be upgraded to such an amazing speed? From the following illustrations, the reader should understand the biggest difference between traditional printing and digital printing. One is contact imaging and the other is non-contact. The latter can be said to have no other physical physics except for the resistance of the air. Bottleneck restrictions. This is like the speed of a car and an airplane. I believe no one will deny that the plane will be faster than the car, and it will be much faster, right? The question is, is it necessary to make such a fast digital press? The author thinks that it is of course necessary. Although you may not buy it, you may not know how to apply it.

How should we transform?

Calculated at the speed of the model that has not yet been released, if you want to print a standard Bible, it should be completed in one second. You may doubt the truth of this statement again - so I said that Hong Kong printers are very backward, which is why. But you don't need to be angry. This is indeed doubtful. Those who don't believe in it are ten. Facts are fait accompli, how should we transform? How to use it is another problem and another wisdom.

Finally, add a few points worth pondering:

1, the price of the above digital printing machine is not expensive, especially in the case of printed newspapers, the printing cost is appropriate.

2, the trend of digital printing is to use environmentally friendly inks, and also add UV inks to greatly expand the types of printing materials.

3, it can print variable data, short version long version can be.

4, it has a spot color scheme

5, You and I can easily understand the operation. I will have another chance to talk again next time!
