Digital printing may have become the hottest topic in the printing industry. At the same time, it also caused a lively discussion in the paper industry. “What should the paper industry do for digital printing? What are the requirements for paper quality for this new printing?” According to Pira’s prediction for 2001, digital commercial printing There will be a large increase, especially for brochures and direct mail order. However, there is only a rough expectation for the scale or growth of the digital printing paper market. Only knowing that the number of digital printing machines in the market is increasing, their production efficiency is expanding, so the amount of paper used is also growing. As for the measurement of the amount of digital printing paper, it is difficult because many digital printers use a lot of traditional printing paper on their digital printing presses, although most digital printing machines have some special performance requirements for paper. However, the familiar offset printing paper is still widely used.

Regardless of the way it is printed, the basic requirements for print on paper are: weight, thickness, brightness, opacity and smoothness. In these respects, digital printing is no exception. However, sometimes special digital presses also impose certain requirements on paper. For example, digital printing machines, copiers or desktop printing machines using the principle of electrostatic printing are most common. For such printing equipment, paper is required to have good dimensional stability, low flexibility and low wrinkling under the environment of temperature and humidity change. At the same time, it is required to have appropriate abrasion resistance, surface conductivity, sufficient stiffness, and less paper dust or dust during the printing process.

Electrical properties, such as resistivity, dielectric constant, etc., should be controlled at appropriate levels. It must also be borne in mind that the moisture content of the paper has a great influence on the performance of the paper and also on its printing performance.

The quality of prints printed on the principle of electrostatic printing is achieved by mastering the correct machine parameters, but the uniformity of the paper is also important: the distribution of fibers or fillers in the paper must be uniform, and the smoothness of the surface is The pros and cons of material transfer are also critical, especially for models with close contact between paper and color. After the toner reaches the paper surface, it is mostly fixed by hot pressing. Therefore, the smoothness of the surface of the paper, the surface chemical properties and the heat treatment properties must also be at an appropriate level. There should be a requirement for the stiffness of low gram weight coated paper to prevent deflection on the hot press roll.

The change of the environmental humidity of the paper during transportation, handling and storage has a great influence on the digital printing quality of the electrostatic printing principle. Therefore, the relevant warehouse, printing workshop and other applications apply air conditioning control.

Digital printing using inkjet technology is very different from digital printing using electrostatic principles. Because inkjet 50%~90% is solvent-based, and most of the pigments are pigmented solid polymer particles. The liquid properties of the ink used in inkjet technology have surface absorption and absorption requirements for paper, including: after the ink droplets are sprayed on the paper, the pigment should remain on the paper surface and not diffuse, which requires controlling the solvent. The rate and amount of absorption, and the controlled solvent eventually evaporates from the paper, forming a uniform print. Therefore, inkjet digital printers have high requirements on the surface properties, pore structure, chemical composition and mechanical properties of paper, and are not uniform for all inkjet printers or inkjet materials.

Papers suitable for inkjet digital printing presses must also be as wrinkled, unobtrusive, and dimensionally stable as possible. The surface abrasion resistance and electrostatic effects must also be controlled within an ideal range to ensure good printing performance.

In short, although most of the digital printing presses are used in ordinary offset printing papers, for some special structures or technologies, digital printing machines have certain requirements for paper under certain specific conditions. . It can be said that so far, no paper can adapt to all digital printing machines, this should be noted.
