Paper formed packaging boxes are assembled from various components and multiple parts formed by bonding and laminating surface materials and formed bone materials. At present, there is a clear trend towards diversification and complexity in the materials used for paper formed packaging boxes. The surface materials are mostly paper, plastic, cloth, leather, etc., while the formed bone materials are mostly cardboard, medium fiber board, plastic, tinplate, etc.
Due to the wide range of materials used, long production process, multiple components, and complex structure, this type of packaging box is mainly produced by hand. But with the significant increase in market demand, the improvement of industrial manufacturing and automation level, and the increasingly fierce market competition, the box structure of this type of packaging box has been basically standardized. For mainstream box types such as top opening bucket boxes, heaven and earth boxes, book boxes, drawer boxes, etc., the entire production line has been automated.
The upper opening bucket box shown in Figure 1 refers to a vertical square box opened from the top, with a vertical box body and a connected shaking lid; The heaven and earth box shown in Figure 2 refers to a packaging box composed of two unsealed single boxes, with the upper and lower boxes not connected to each other and closed in a cover form. The upper box is the sky and the lower box is the ground; The book shaped box shown in Figure 3 refers to a packaging box that can be opened from right to left like flipping a book. It generally consists of two parts: a face shell and an inner box. The face shell wraps around the inner box, and a part of the face shell can be flipped, which is the lid.

Regarding the three common box types mentioned above, there are many equipment manufacturers in Wenzhou, Zhejiang and Dongguan, Guangdong who are producing and researching related automation equipment. Some only produce auxiliary equipment on the assembly line, such as foam presses, folding machines, etc; Some produce corresponding automation equipment for a certain component, such as shell making machines, cover plate assembly machines, barrel box body forming machines, sky and earth box forming machines, etc; A small number of enterprises have developed whole line automation equipment for a single box type, which includes automated molding of various components, automated connection of various molding workstations, and automated assembly of various components, including box body, box cover, shock-absorbing pad, bagging, etc. However, they do not have the manufacturing capability for multiple box type automation production lines.
Overall, the development level of automated production lines for this type of packaging box is still lacking. Compared with traditional printing and packaging machinery such as printing machines, hot stamping machines, and die-cutting machines, there is still a significant gap in speed, accuracy, stability, and overall quality. The future is long and arduous. Based on a survey of the display of liquor product supermarket shelves in the market, an analysis of the structure of existing mainstream liquor formed packaging boxes was conducted. Communication was made with multiple liquor formed packaging box manufacturers and knife template manufacturers, and visits and investigations were conducted on automation equipment manufacturers for such products. The author summarized the key points of knowledge about the structure of liquor formed packaging boxes, in order to facilitate the efficient selection of equipment, development of new products, and rapid and stable mass production for new competitors.
Overall appearance
01
Opening direction
The common way to open bucket shaped boxes and book shaped boxes is to flip the lid from right to left, and the opening hole is usually located on the right side; But in the past two years, there has been a noticeable trend of opening the lid from the front to the back.
There are two mainstream ways to open the Tiandi box: upward opening and downward opening. After opening, all the products inside the box are left on the ground. If the size ratio of the box is vertical, a single box with a larger height can be designed with a barrel shaped box forming method for paper and bone structure.
02
Joint position
The display surface is on the front side, and the middle seam is usually located on the side, near the back side. Both the left and right sides are acceptable. After molding, the edge of the lap joint must not be on the main display surface.
Die cutting direction
Usually, paper surface paper is die cut on the front, while plastic coated paper and leather colored surface are die cut on the back. In addition, a very small number of products with high requirements for contour regularity have a V-shaped groove on the back for the color surface indentation.
Paper structure of automatic forming machine
The most common forming machine production line in the industry is based on the direction of paper feeding, with the bottom of the face paper on the right side and the front edge of the middle seam as the forward direction. Forward feeding is the standard model. The forming of the machine is on the left side of the paper direction. Of course, there are also a few packaging boxes with irregular mouth shapes and differentiated layout, requiring the molding machine to feed in the opposite direction, that is, the overlapping edge of the middle seam is on the last side.
Whether the bottom paper is connected to the box body and whether there is a large area of overlapping edges can be formed. When forming, glue is applied to the back of the face paper, and the board is aligned beyond one side along the direction of the middle seam edge. The back of the face paper is bonded to the back of the board, and the schematic diagram of the alignment forming is shown in Figure 4.

Color matching size
01
Hole diameter matching
After aligning the colored surface with the center of the board hole, the diameter of the colored surface is 4mm outside and 5mm inside, and the diameter of the cardboard hole is the same as that of the colored surface inside. Open the shaking lid of the bucket box, and the size of the inner and outer holes on the color surface should be consistent with the size of the industrial cardboard, which is 6mm.
02
Double indentation line
The double indentation width is designed to increase by 0.3mm according to the thickness of the board.
03
Joint edge design
The overlapping edge is divided into three types: mouth overlapping, middle seam overlapping, and bottom overlapping. The width of the overlapping edge is 15-20mm. The die tangent line of the mouth and bottom overlapping edge is 0.5mm closest to the indentation line of the mouth and bottom.
The slope of the edge of the mouth joint is 90 °, and the tangent line of the mouth joint of the book shaped box intersects with the indentation line, with a slope of 45 °. The slope of the joint edge of the middle seam is 10-15 degrees. The slope of the bottom joint edge is 90 degrees.
04
Color side dimensions
The side dimension of the middle seam is equal to the other side dimension minus 0.5-1mm.
Industrial cardboard
01
Shrinkage size of cardboard compared to face paper

Face paper that is easily absorbent and has a significant increase in size refers to materials with no water sealing layer on the back, generally referring to low weight paper weighing 105-125g. The width of the paper surface is -0.3mm, and the height of the cardboard is -1mm.
Medium sized facial paper with water absorption refers to a material with a sealing layer on the back, commonly used for 150-190g special paper and white cardboard for facial paper. The width of the paper surface is -0.5mm, and the height of the cardboard is -1mm.
Face paper with small size increase after absorbing water refers to materials with a sealing layer on the back, generally referring to 255-375g gold silver cardboard and high weight special paper. The width of the paper surface is -0.7mm, and the height of the cardboard is -1mm.
However, the width of the side seam in industrial cardboard should not be reduced in size and should be consistent with the width of the other side seam. After identifying the root cause of the problem, we have made corresponding technical requirements for replacing the embossing roller. Firstly, we require that the diameter error at both ends be measured before replacing the embossing roller. If the error exceeds 0.5mm, it is prohibited to use it on the machine. The embossing roller needs to be re ground and marked with large and small heads; The second is to avoid the large and small heads of the embossing rollers of adjacent units facing the same side. The above measures have basically eliminated the problem of inaccurate overprinting caused by uneven diameters at both ends of the embossing roller.
02
Matching method between cardboard boards
There are generally two ways of interlocking between the seams of the cardboard box body, which are the interlocking of concave and convex buckles and the interlocking of 45 ° oblique edges. There are generally two ways to connect the bottom of the cardboard box with the bottom plate, which are the interlocking of concave and convex buckles and the collision of right angled edges.
After long-term verification, whether it is automatic molding machines or traditional manual operations, the interlocking structure of the concave convex buckle is more stable and stable, with a lower probability of high and low angles. The depth of the concave convex buckle is equal to the cardboard thickness of -0.1mm, with a width difference of 1mm between the concave and convex positions. The groove buckle at the bottom of the box body is designed with a trapezoidal width of 20-35mm. The concave convex buckle at the middle seam is designed with a distance of 20mm from both ends divided into five equal parts.
03
Tooth blade line
Industrial cardboard box covers that require adhesive vacuum pads and ribbons can be designed with toothed knives for positioning. The position where the cardboard needs to be torn off should be designed with a serrated line to reduce burrs after tearing.
04
Tooth blade line
The width of the mouth strip is 18-25mm, usually 20mm. The back of the barrel shaped box mouth strip is half cut with a knife, leaving 1/3 of the cardboard thickness uncut.
05
Slot requirements
The slotting angle should be clearly indicated on the die drawing file. The slotting angles of various products in existing processes are shown in Table 1.

Splicing matters
The conventional paper sizes in the industry are regular 787 × 1092mm and large 889 × 1194mm, with roll paper widths of 787mm and 889mm. The first size of paper is usually the horizontal direction, and the second size is the vertical direction, that is, the fiber direction.
When splicing, try to consider using the standard sizes of 787mm and 889mm horizontally to save paper. Paper manufacturers are not likely to change this size unless the single order quantity reaches several hundred tons. The feasibility of customizing the longitudinal dimensions of paper is high.
01
Box body splicing
When assembling multiple panels on the box body, the panels should be assembled head to head and head to tail, with the center of panel 1 being symmetrical and the slot positions of panel 3 being aligned as much as possible.
02
Box cover assembly
The industrial cardboard tail of the box cover is connected by two joints, a middle toothed knife or a dot connection, and then multiple joints are made.
03
Lining paper layout
When low weight liner paper has a large ratio of length and width in single splicing, multiple splicing requires the long side of the single splicing to be perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the paper, and the long side to be parallel to the transverse direction of the paper. Normally, the first size of a single sheet of paper is the horizontal dimension of the paper pattern.
04
connection point
Dot connections between splices, with a dot width of 0.8mm, to facilitate die-cutting production. Dot on the V-groove line or on both sides of the concave convex position, not on the groove, mouth or easily visible parts.
Through nearly two years of investigation, analysis, and production practice, the company has opened multiple production lines, including automatic forming lines for barrel boxes, heaven and earth boxes, book boxes, and traditional manual assembly lines. The process technology and production operators have all transformed from the previous ordinary folding box industry, and the production capacity has increased from non-existent to existing, now reaching 80000 pieces per day.
Regardless of whether the structure is simple or complex, the changes in surface paper and bone materials can be derived and applied according to the above common sense points. As long as the order of fitting dimensions is clarified, the internal dimensions of external components are matched with the external dimensions of internal components, and the material thickness, unpressed thickness, and unslotted thickness are considered, new projects can reduce production obstacles and quickly enter mass production.
