After the publication industry "said goodbye to lead and fire", proofreading became a bottleneck in the publishing process, and the use of computers for Chinese proofreading brought hope to the publishing industry.
1, the development history of Chinese proofreading software
In 1993, we began to develop the "Dark Horse Text Proofreading" version 1.0. In April 1994, we made a demonstration disk and participated in the "Beijing Fair". After six days of exhibitions, we sold more than 60 sets of proofing software.
After the first battle, the proofreading software became the company's most important product. However, despite our early opportunities, in early 1995, we were caught in the dilemma that many new technology companies have encountered: it seems that overnight, seven hundred and eight companies' Chinese proofing software emerged. After hard work and six versions of improvement, the dark horse text proofreading finally stood firm in the market.
Based on the traditional binary search method, we use a special technology to convert the knowledge base and index, which can save 50% to 66% of storage space, which means that the running speed can be increased by two to three times. Another technique we have is to increase the number of hard disk queries by adding a search filter, which can reduce the number of queries by up to 80%.
With these technical means, we further accumulate and increase the capacity of the knowledge base. On the one hand, the corpus is collected through various means, and on the other hand, the corpus processing ability is enhanced. By 1998, we had accumulated more than 1 billion Chinese characters.
Since 1996, we have started to develop the Word version of the Black Horse proofreading software and directly proofread the files edited in Word. However, due to some restrictions, it is difficult to achieve the functions required for professional proofreading in Word. Therefore, we are determined to develop a full 32-bit editing proofing software, which is now the editor 98.
The Chinese version of the proofreading software for Windows needs to solve the problem of file format processing. Relatively speaking, PS is an international standard format. S2 files have been text-converted before, and the Word file format is not disclosed, but it is good that Word files can be saved in RTF format, so we have a solution. In the era of Windows 95/98, Chinese proofreading software finally stood the challenge and test.
2. The future of Chinese proofreading
On the one hand, proofreading should be developed in the direction of specialization; on the other hand, as the proofreading function matures, we are also trying to popularize it, especially to enter the mainstream typesetting system and mainstream word processing software. We have already cooperated with IBM, specifically in Lotus WordPro; we have also cooperated with Lenovo Chinese character system to add proofreading functions to Lenovo Office. ?
In the Internet tide, we can use the network to develop proofreading business. Since 1997, we have opened a network proofreading. Users only need to send the documents they want to proofread to us by email. After proofreading with the computer proofreading software, we will pass the proofreading results back to the user. We will not charge any fees during the whole process. cost. With more than a year of operation, we have more than 80 users.
From the perspective of proofreading, a corpus currently needs at least 6.4 billion to 40 billion Chinese characters. The collection, organization, processing and application of such a large corpus requires a huge investment, and it is really overkill to use it only for text proofreading. Moreover, the proofreading is based on context-sensitive analysis, which is the basis of many other software, such as keyboard intelligent input, OCR recognition and post-processing, and voice. Therefore, we hope to establish a shared corpus in some way to develop Chinese proofreading into information. The weapon of processing, this is the biggest wish of the Dark Horse.
